Hi everyone,

It has been a little bit since I did my last report. I apologize for the delay in reporting but it has been very busy for me lately. Things here are heating up. The weather has been beautiful with flat calm seas in the mornings with a light to moderate breeze in the afternoon from the East, Southeast. The water temperatures have been warming nicely both inshore and off shore. With this water warming we normally see the influx of bait in the area. So far this year we have seen good populations of mullet, ballyhoo, half beaks, and small flying fish. What we have not seen is the arrival of the sardines. The sardines are a big key to the fly fishing in our area. They provide us with the chum we need off the boats as well as bringing fish close to the beach.

The sardines we are currently getting have to come from either way up North or from an area far South. The bait has not hit our area yet. Even with the lack of sardines in the area we still have fish in our waters. They are just keying in on different types of bait.

Inshore and off the beach we have a fair number of rooster fish as well as jacks. The fish have been quite picky this past week with a lot of fish looking at the flies we are throwing and not eating them. They are getting a lot of attention because we have a lot of anglers on the beaches right now hitting them with all kinds of gear. This gear ranges from conventional top water lures, to flies, to spoons, and even some things I have never seen.

The fish are not responding well due to pressure and the lack of sardines is a factor as well. It is not impossible to catch fish but you must work at it a little harder than normal.

Offshore the fishing has been very good for marlin. Each boat is getting between two and six hook up’s a day. We also have had a few sailfish mixed in. The bite for bonita has been very good for the anglers who have sardines and are willing to use them on these little bullets. The dorado are starting to show up with the odd nice fish being caught by the anglers looking for marlin.

This next week will tell us a lot about what is to come. If we do not see the sardines in any great number it could be tough for the next couple of weeks until they arrive. If the bait comes into the area this next week. We are in for some fantastic fishing.

I will be on the water everyday this week. I will be sure to report to you how things are shapeing up.

Until next time…Keep fly fishing!

Baja Mexico fly fishing update and report posted on April 23rd 2012.

Hi folks,

This past week we have had a little bit of everything. Late Sunday afternoon of last week, you could feel the wind starting to blow from the North. With the forecast to be windy here in the East cape my guest and I decided to get up early and drive over to the other side and fly fish out of Cabo San Lucas. It was a great decision. The wind blew here on the East cape very hard keeping anglers off the water. We on the other hand, found flat beautiful water along with some excellent fly fishing for rooster fish and Bonita.

The wind continued to blow until mid week. On Wednesday the winds stopped and the weather turned beautiful. For the rest of the week we experienced bright sunny skies along with flat calm seas and some excellent fly fishing.

Along the beach and inshore we continue to have some good fly fishing for rooster fish and jacks. A lot of the fish are still not eating due to the current spawning activity. Don’t let that get you down! Plenty of these fish are eating. You just have to keep fishing and find the right fish. My Guest Greg DeJulio got out with us once the wind stopped and landed four nice fish from the beach.

Offshore we have had some incredible fishing for marlin and dorado. I have spent the last two days offshore and yesterday we raised eight fish and today we raised five. We were able to get about half of those fish to eat the fly. Out of those half a dozen we got two to the boat. We also found some very big dorado. We caught four dorado that all averaged 35#. They were very nice fish. It is good to see the off shore action heating up. We always have some great blue water fly fishing in the spring. It is starting to happen and it is exciting.

This upcoming week I will be on the beach as well as fishing out of the boat. The weather is forecast to blow slightly this week and if it does I will be headed back over to Cabo. If it stays nice I will be here on the East Cape chasing everything from rooster fish and jacks to marlin, sail fish, dorado, and bonita because they are all currently here.

Until next time….Keep fly fishing.

Baja Mexico fly fishing update and report posted on April 9th 2012.

Hi folks,

The weather this past week was very nice. We had some wind from the North very early in the week and again yesterday. Our day’s have been filled with plenty of sunshine and very little cloud cover.

The fly fishing here in the East Cape is getting a little better. We’re seeing lot’s of fish inshore. Most of these fish are jacks with the occasional rooster school being spotted. The problem is that most of the fish are starting to spawn and are not very aggressive toward the fly. This is typical of the spring. We will continue to see this trend over the next few weeks.

We currently are getting better shots at the fish if we are fly fishing out of the boat rather than on the beach. Most of the fish have been hanging on the outer edges of the sand bars and have been very tough for fly fishing anglers to reach if they are fly fishing from the beach. Another nice thing about the boat, especially this time of year, is we have the ability to throw live bait to the fish. This live bait can often times entice fish that are not interested in anything but spawning to go ahead and take the easy meal. This allows us to throw flies to fish that otherwise might ignore them otherwise.

If you are not looking for the inshore species like rooster fish and jacks. But are looking for the off shore species like yellow tail, marlin, dorado, and tuna we have a few in the area. The off shore fishing currently is pretty good for this early in the year. We have a fair marlin bite off the light house currently. Along with the occasional dorado in the same area. The yellow tail bite that we have been experiencing off La Ribera the past few weeks has dropped off considerably. The boats that are willing to work hard are still getting a few. Most of the boats have been chasing pompano. We’ve had excellent fishing this past week for pompano. They have been in deep water making it very hard for us fly fishing anglers to get to them. If you have enough chum you can get them up on the surface. Getting enough bait is the key currently as we do not have much of it in the area.

On the Pacific side out of cabo San Lucas we continue to see very good fly fishing inshore. We are still catching some very nice sierra eventhough it is getting a little late in the season for them. Rooster fish are making a good showing on the Pacific side currently. Most of the fish have been in and around the Pueblo Bonito area. they are not big fish averaging between 5 and 12 lbs. with some bigger ones mixed in. It is good to see the rooster fish no matter what the size.

We are also seeing some nice schools of snapper on the Pacific side. I got a report from a friend of mine who was fly fishing to them yesterday. It sounds as if the schools were quite large.

I will be out on the beach here in the East cape tomorrow and then on Tuesday I am headed over to Cabo for three days to guide clients. I am looking forward to getting back over to Cabo San Lucas. It’s forecast to be windy from the North for a few days here at home. It will be nice to be fly fishing in calm waters on that side. I will be sure to report how this week goes.

Until next time….Keep fly fishing!!

Baja Mexico fly fishing update and report postedon March 29th 2012.

Hi folks,

Things here in the East Cape are starting to heat up. We have seen less wind this past week giving us excellent fishing conditions. Our day time temps. have bee perfect. Our average high’s are in the mid 80′s and over night low’s right around 60 degreese. We’ve had lot’s of sunshine and just a few scatterd colouds on most days.

On the fishing front things are starting to gel. Here in the East Cape we have had some pretty decent fishing from the beach for some very nice Rooster fish. Don’t get me wrong it is not in “full swing” but there are enought fish starting to show that it is getting fun. I was out with my buddy Stacy Corbin and he caught a nice fish of about 40# two days ago. We were out the next day and did not see a fish after having a number of good shot’s the day before. This time of year the fish tend to move quite a bit. Once the spawn starts and the bait arrives we should start to see more consistent action for Rooster fish.

Along with the Rooster fish we have had a good number of Jack’s here on the East Cape as well. Most of these fish are schooling in big groups and actively spawning. If you find the right group you will have a few break away and chase your fly. It has been a “one shot” deal lately with the jacks. The first cast is the one they are going to look at and after that they have no intrest so make the first one count.

Offshore here in the East Cape we are seing some excellent fishng for yellow tail. Most of these fish have been caught on bigger baits like mackerel fished deep. I know of a few sardina in the area that the bait pangas are getting but they are charging a premium for them due to the lack of them. If you are willing to pay the price (about double) you have a chance to chum up some very nice yellow tail in the 30 – 40 pound class and throw flies to them.

We also have a pretty good showing of marlin in the waters just off the light house. most of the boats are averageing around 3 fish a day with chances for more. The fish have been striking the trolle jigs so this is a good time to perofme a “bait and swith” and throw flies to these awesome fish.

The current report out of Cabo San Lucas remains about the same. They continue to see good action inshore for Sierra, yellow tail and a few Roosters. I have not been on that side for a week or so but I have a trip out of Cabo San Lucas in a couple of days so I will be sure to give the up to date scoop after my trip.

I am fishing here in the East Cape with clients starting tomorrow. We will be on the beach as well as out of boats. I will give the latest report on Monday.

Until next time….Keep fly fishing!

Baja Mexico fly fishing update and report posted on February 6th, 2012.

Hi Folks,

Things remain typical for this time of year here in the East Cape. Our night time temperatures have been getting down in the low 50′s. During the day we have been warming up quite nicely with our day time high temp’s in the mid to high 70′s.

We continue to see winds from the North here in the East Cape. We received a little break from the wind late last week. We had three days in a row that were very calm and beautiful. That break did not last long. We are back to the winds picking up each day around 9 A.M. and by noon they are at full force.

The winds have been on average blowing around 20mph. with higher gusts. The forecast for this week is for the winds to be a little less early in the week. On Thursday they are calling for the winds to pick up and be quite strong going into the end of the week and over the weekend.

With all the wind here in the East Cape the fishing (especially fly fishing) has been extremely tough. If you pick the right day and get out extremely early we have had a pretty good showing of sierra. Most of the fish have been found inshore and along the beach in the area between La Capilla and Los Pinos. The fish have been active very early in the morning before the wind starts to kick up.

I have also heard of a few yellow tail being caught here close to home. This is the time of year they should start showing up. I know they are starting to show in pretty good numbers around Cabo San Lucas. It sounds as if a few have made it here to the East Cape. It will not be long until we see good numbers of them here in the East Cape.

With all the wind we have had here on the East Cape I have been running all my trips out of San Jose del Cabo as well as Cabo San Lucas. I have had great fishing in both places this past week.

Out of San Jose we’ve had excellent fly fishing for bonita. These fish have averaged around 10lbs. with fish as large as 20lbs.. We’ve also had a fair number of dorado showing up to the chum when fishing for the bonita. We caught three dorado on Friday. The dorado have been on average about 15lbs. On Friday had some very nice yellow fin tuna mixed in with the bonita. We hooked a couple but both of them broke off as we were very under gunned. We were fishing 9wt. rods and they were not enough to stop the 30# yellow fin.

Out Of Cabo San Lucas I have been catching sierra with my client’s. The fly fishing for sierra has been excellent this year. The fish have not been huge, but they have been nice fly rod fish. Most of the sierra have been in the 5-6# class with a few larger fish mixed in.

We have also been seeing a fair number of rooster fish out of Cabo San Lucas. These fish have been moving around quite a bit. We have had to search quite hard for them on some days. Once you find them they are all quality fish. Most of them have been between 10 -30#.

I am headed back over to San Jose del Cabo tomorrow morning to chase more bonita and dorado with my guests. You can be sure I will have a few bigger rods rigged up for the yellow fin. I will be sure to report back on how we do this week.

Until next time….Keep fly fishing!

Baja Mexico fly fishing update and report posted on December 26th, 2011.

Hi Folks,

I hope all of you had a wonderful and happy holiday this past weekend. Even though we did not have any snow here in Baja it felt like it could happen any time. We have been experiencing very cold day time temperatures combined with very strong winds making the East Cape feel more like Colorado than the warm paradise it is known for. On the other side near Cabo San Lucas it is slightly warmer as they are not affected by the strong North winds we currently have here in the East Cape.

The winds have kept any of us from getting out and going fishing here in the East Cape. I have been keeping track of the wind the past few days and it has been blowing on average 26mph. with gusts upwards of 38mph.. It has been this way for the past several days.

Before the winds started we had some very good fly fishing for Sierra. We were seeing good numbers of sierra from North to South. If you were fishing North the area to be was Punta Pescadero. I was up in this area just before the winds with my friend Vicente. Vicente is a local captain and was telling me he had been fishing from the beach in the evenings up North and doing very well on Sierra. I decided to join him one evening and we had a blast. We caught sierra, as well as a couple of jacks and one roosterfish. There was a lot of bait in the area. It was nice to see the bait is still around.

If you were fishing to the South you wanted to be in the area of La Ribera. I had another friend who told me that every day at sun rise, as well as every evening, he was getting his limit of Sierra. I was going to go down and fish with him but the day I was going to meet him the wind was blowing 30mph.. We are still waiting for the wind to stop.

On the Pacific side, out of Cabo San Lucas is where I have been doing my fishing lately. The Pacific side is not effected by the North winds. I was over there two days ago. I fished with my guest Pat Doneen. Although it was cold and overcast on the day we fished we managed to get a few nice Sierra.

We have been seeing some very good action for Sierra as well as roosterfish out of Cabo. Most of the roosterfish have been closer to Cabo where the Sierra have been further to the North. Most of the sierra have been in the 2-6 pound range with a few larger ones mixed in. The roosterfish have been a little larger with a few fish to 15 pounds being caught.

I will be going back over to Cabo for a three day trip starting on Tuesday. I am looking forward to getting back on the water. I will be sure to post a report as well as a few photos of our trip.

I hope to see some of you at the Fly Fishing Show in Denver Colorado, Jan. 6-8th. I will be at the show and am looking forward to seeing a lot of old friends and making some new ones. If you are attending the show please stop buy the booth and say hello.

Until Next time…Keep fly fishing!!

Baja Mexico fly fishing update and report posted December 7th, 2011.

Hi Folks,

I finally returned home yesterday from Mag Bay. My last two trips were great in the fact that I was out fishing with great people in a great place. We saw whales and porpoise along with some bait and for a couple of days wind. What we did not see was fish. I was hoping that the wind had put them down but after fishing the area for a few days it was apparent that the fish had moved on.

At the end of my last trip I got information that the fish were found in “no man’s land” between Mag bay and Cabo. These fish should gradually start showing up off the banks out of Cabo San Lucas over the next few weeks. Once they do I will be chasing them once again.

Here in the East Cape we have a lot of fish. We have Marlin, Sierra, and very good numbers of dorado. Unfortunately we have been experiencing very strong wind almost every day. keeping all anglers off the water. The wind has been averaging 28 -30 MPH daily.

Once the wind lays down we will have to see if the fish are still in the area. The problem is that the winds are forecast to remain in our area for the next few days. If the winds calm down and let us get back out on the water it could be wonderful fishing.

I will be headed to the states for a very quick trip starting tomorrow. Hopefully by the time I get back the winds will have subsided and I can get back out on the water.

Until next time…Keep fly fishing!!

Hi Folks,

This will be a pretty short report. We have only had two day’s this past week that were fish able here in the East cape. This was due to strong winds from the North.

The two days that I was able to get out with my guests we found some pretty decent action. We found quite a few small to medium rooster fish as well as some very good fly fishing for sierra the first day we were able to get out.

On the second day we found dorado. Most of the action for the dorado was located in front La Ribera. The dorado were found pretty close to shore just inside the blue water. We continued to find good fly fishing for rooster fish this day as well.

I am headed back over to Magdalena Bay tomorrow. I will be filming a couple of episodes for Fish The Baja. I will be sure give everyone the report of how the shoot went as soon as I return.

Until next time…Keep fly fishing
