Hi folks,

We had a little wind earlier in the week but today we woke up to flat calm seas and ideal fishing conditions. I spent the day with my good friend and fellow guide from Alaska Stacy Corbin. Stacy is the owner of Mystic waters fishing www.mysticwaters.com out of Cooper Landing on the upper Keni. Stacy and I found some very good early morning action for Sierra with fish chasing bait in all directions. As this was going on we had a very nice Rooster fish chase a mullet right to our feet. This got our attention and we decided to chase Roosters. We had some very good action with Stacy catching a very respectable fish not ten minutes into our Rooster fish hunt. We continued to fish the rest of the day looking for these elusive fish. As the last of the light was fading to the west we opened a cold beer and looked back on the day. We recalled how we had put in a lot of miles as well as a lot of casts with the teaser. We talked about the fish that came in so excited and “lit up” and how we both froze for just second in awe of this fish. We recalled how we had a grab of the fly from a 25lb to 30lb Rooster fish and how Stacy came tight on the fish and somehow that fish never got the hook. We also looked back in amazement on how we had a Dorado follow the teaser from the deep water right to the beach and how Stacy got the fish to eat the fly. Dorado are not supposed to do that. It was an amazing day. Stacy and I will be out at it once again tomorrow. We are hoping we can get the fish to play one more time.

Until next time…..keep fishing.

This is Bruce Corson holding his first Rooster fish on a fly.

Hi folks,

As I write this the wind from the North is blowing strong outside. The wind started yesterday and they were some of the strongest we have seen in a long time. Today the winds are once again quite strong but are predicted to be a little less severe than yesterday. Last week we had a five day stretch where we saw no wind and beautiful weather. During the great weather we had last week I was able to get my guests Bruce and Shelly Corson out fishing. They traveled from Alaska to escape the cold and get in some fishing. We had a great three days of fishing. We have had a very good bite for yellow tail in the area and since we had noticed that the bite for Rooster fish had been later in the day we started each morning looking for yellow tail on light tackle. We did not find any yellow tail although we saw some nice ones being caught around us. We did however find some very good fishing for Grouper. We caught a few each morning and Bruce was lucky enough to catch a yellow Cabrilla. They are very rare in this area. Everyone on the boat was very excited when that fish came up and we saw what it was.

Bruce was really here to fly fish and we did a lot of that as well. We found excellent action for smaller Rooster fish and Jack Crevelle along with all the Sierra one could catch. We also encountered some very big schools of Rooster fish that would be considered in the “Grande” class. We had many of these fish up and Bruce was able to get three of the fish to eat his fly but we could not get one to stay on. We are also seeing schools of large Jack Crevell that on average are between fifteen and forty pounds. We once again had them crashing all around the boat and each one found a way to not get hooked completely. The inshore fly fishing is heating up. I expect to see more action for bigger Rooster fish a little earlier this season than in seasons past if the numbers we currently have in the area are any indication.

Off shore was pretty quiet this past week. We had a few Dorado in close to shore that were caught and a few marlin spotted a little further out that did not want to bite. I did hear of a tuna being caught but I have not heard of any real numbers of them being found yet this season.

The wind is forecast to blow for the next few days and although it makes the wind surfers happy it dose not make the anglers in the area happy. The wind will keep us off the water for the next few days here in the East Cape. I am headed over to the Pacific side tomorrow to get out of the wind and fish with my guests that are staying over on that side. I will be sure to report how we do.

Until then….. Keep fishing!

Peggy showing off her very nice Rooster fish.

Hi folks,

Things here in Baja are going smooth. The fly fishing has been wonderful and the weather has been great as well. We did see some rain mid week last week and it was a pretty decent rainfall. That makes two weeks in a row we have experienced some rain. This past storm lasted only a day but brought us about a 1/2 inch of rain. The landscape is very green and lush around the area at the moment. We had a couple of calm days here on the East Cape early last week but over the past couple of days the North wind has cranked back up and it looks as if it might be here for another few days before settling back down. Water temperatures continue to hover around the mid 70’s with the Cortez side being slightly warmer than the Pacific side.

On the fishing front, I have been traveling back and forth to Cabo San Lucas quite a bit the last few weeks and the fishing out of Cabo has not been disappointing. I spent a wonderful day with Conrad and Peggy Rafield last week. We fished just after the rain passed through and had a great day. The day started out with just a few fish showing due to the fairly strong Northwest wind and overcast skies we were experiencing as the tail end of the front moved through the area. By mid morning the front had moved through. The wind dropped to almost nothing and the sun came out and the fish responded. Conrad caught more Sierra than we could count and Peggy got into the Rooster fish and Jacks. By the end of the day it was warm and sunny and we experienced a wonderful day of fly fishing in Baja.

The fly fishing here on the East Cape also continues to be very good. On days that the wind allows us to fish, the area is holding very good numbers of Sierra, Jacks, Bonito, Dorado, and a few Marlin. The Sierra continue to dominate the action with the best action located in front of Rancho Leonero and Punta Arena. The numbers of Dorado are not as high as they were a couple of weeks ago but we continue to see some in the area with the average fish weighing between six and twelve pounds. Most of the Dorado have been found close to shore with the area between North Beach and Palmas de Cortez producing the most action. The Marlin have moved a little closer to shore. Most of the Marlin have been located straight out toward the 10/10 between three and five miles out. We also have seen the first school of Yellow Tail this season and everyone is excited. I know of a nice school of Yellows that were found out in front of La Ribera. This is the first school of Yellow Tail I have heard of this year here in the East Cape. People are talking about how it is going to be a great season for Yellow Tail. We will have to wait and see. We have seen a few in Cabo over the past couple of weeks. It is nice to see they are getting around the corner. This is the time they start showing every year, so if things go well over the next few weeks we should see some great Yellow Tail action as they continue to move in.

I have clients checking into the hotel here in the East Cape tomorrow and we will be fishing the entire week. If the wind continues to blow in the East Cape and not allow us to chase some fish on this side, we will slide over to Cabo and make some casts. It will not matter if we are fly fishing here in the East Cape or in Cabo; either way I will be sure to let everyone know what we find. You can count on that!

Until then….. Keep fishing!

A rainy start to February. The fish don’t care as they are already wet.

Hi everyone,

We are currently experiencing some rain here in Southern Baja. As I sit and write this report the rain steadily falls outside. This is not our normal time of year that we see rain but here in Baja we are jumping for joy anytime we get some. The rain moved in this morning and is forecast to be here for the next 24 hours. The forecast calls for showers tonight and into tomorrow afternoon tapering off tomorrow night. We will be back to the sunny and bright conditions as well as some good fly fishing that Baja is known for on Thursday morning.

Speaking of fly fishing, we have some pretty good fishing in the area. We did not have much wind last week and that allowed us to be on the water. I was able to get out the other morning and do some fishing for myself and I found nice pockets of action. We still have very good numbers of Sierra along the beaches and inshore. The Sierra bite has been best early in the morning with most of the action coming the first couple hours of daylight and tapering off by mid morning. I also had a few smaller Rooster fish that were mixed in as well. It is always good to see those little ones as they eventually grow into the slabs we are always hoping to see.

A little further off shore we continue to see very decent numbers of Dorado and Marlin in the area considering it is the first week of February. These fish continue to be located off Punta Pescadero between two and five miles off shore. I also heard that the Dorado bite had picked up to the South of Meganos Blancos but not many boats were going that far South because they do not want to take a chance on the wind coming up from the North making for a very long and uncomfortable ride home.

Over all the fishing is holding steady. We should start to see an increase in action if we can get a few more days with no wind. I was supposed to go to Cabo San Lucas tomorrow and fish with two of my best clients and dear friends Kevin and Meredith Kynerd. It is going to rain again tomorrow so we have decided to get together and just have lunch. That is ok as they will be back in just a couple of months to chase that slab of a Rooster fish mentioned earlier.

Until next time…..Keep fishing!

With all the Sierra in the area don’t forget to use wire!

Hi folks,

This past week we experienced a break from the wind. Last Friday the wind dropped and we woke up on Saturday to flat calm seas and beautiful weather. The wind has remained calm for the entire week giving the fly fishing angler as well as the conventional angler great fishing conditions.

Here in the East Cape we continue to see good numbers of Sierra very close to shore. These fish are spread out all over the area with fish being caught from Punta Pescadero to our North all the way to Punta Arena to the South. I was out on the beach Monday morning in front of Hotel Buenavista and the Sierra were everywhere chasing small bait. I did not have a rod with me at the time so I just watched as the fish ripped around the area and bait was fleeing in every direction. I enjoy just sitting back and watching events like this as it is nature at it best.

Other than Sierra we also have a few Dorado and Marlin in the area. The lack of wind and calm seas have allowed the boats to get out fishing and the catch has been pretty good for considering we are in the middle of our “off” season. The Dorado and Marlin have been spread out with most of them being caught in and around Punta Pescadero from two to ten miles off shore.

I spent a great day on the water out of Cabo San Lucas this past week with Chris Keeley from Colorado. Chris is the owner of Anglers All fly shop - www.anglersall.com and they are a great bunch of guys. Chris and I had some tough fishing in the morning. The fish did not want to move to the teaser but with persistence we managed to get a few. In the afternoon the fish decided they wanted to play and Chris and I had a ball as he caught one after another. We even were able to find a few decent sized Rooster fish and Chris hooked one of these great fish but unfortunately the fish broke off on the hook set.

The wind is scheduled to slowly build back up here in the East cape. We should see a couple more days of great weather with the wind forecast to start once again on Sunday. I am going to try and hit the beach over the next couple days before the wind picks back up. I will be sure to let everyone know how it goes in my next report.

Until then…. keep fishing.

Garrett Gill escaped the snow in Denver Colorado to come down to Cabo and enjoy a little sunshine and some great fly fishing.

Hello Everyone,

It is mid January and we have had some very nice weather so far in 2010. On the East Cape side of the peninsula we continue to see some strong winds from the North. However, our days were filled with plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures. The winds did not come up as early this past week. Anglers in the area who were willing to get up early and try their luck were rewarded with good fishing before the winds blew them off the water.

The East Cape is surprising anglers who are venturing off shore with good catches of Dorado and Marlin. Closer to shore the Sierra continue to be the main attraction.

On the other side out of Cabo San Lucas we have had no wind to speak of with flat sea conditions and some pretty good fishing. We continue to see some Dorado although the strong bite we saw last week dropped off slightly this week. Inshore we continue to see good action for Sierra. Most of the Sierra we caught this past week were slightly smaller than the fish we were catching a few weeks ago but they were plenty big to put a good bend in an 8wt.

I will be back on the Pacific side starting on Friday as I have more cliets looking to get out of the cold and snow and into the sun and surf of Cabo to catch a few fish on the fly along the way. I will be sure to report how we do.

Until then…. keep fishing.

Hello everyone,

Well another week has past and we are into a new year. I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday. Here in the East Cape I do not know what people did over the holiday week. Some I am sure spent the holiday week inside rooting for there favorite collage football team if they were in a bowl game or took a nice drive along the coast or some many even be returning here to Baja after there holiday travels. One thing I do know is that not many people here in the East Cape were fishing over this past week due to the wind.

Here in the East Cape it has been a very windy week. The wind has been constant for a good six or seven days. The wind usually dies at night and we get at least a few hours in the early morning to chase some of the Sierra that are in the area but this week the wind has ether not settled during the night or it has picked up very early in the morning not giving the anglers that are here much of a chance. Before the wind started we had good fishing during the early morning hours for Sierra along the beaches and inshore. We also had a few Marlin in the area along with the occasional Dorado and Tuna.

I have been spending my time over in Cabo San Lucas guiding my clients. We saw some good fishing last week out of Cabo San Lucas. We had good action near shore for Sierra Mackerel. We were able to tease up some very nice schools that were willing to eat the fly. Most of the Sierra were between Four and Six pounds with some larger fish hooked but not landed. Mixed in with the Sierra we found a decent number of Rooster fish. We found more Rooster fish on the Sea of Cortez side in the area of Palmilla than we did on the Pacific side. Most of the Rooster fish averaged around five pounds.

Offshore in Cabo the Marlin bite has been spotty. The main catch this past week was Dorado. We had one nice day on Dorado with a catch of eight fish. All on fly. All released. I did hear of a few tuna being found further off shore but I do not know the details.

I am headed back to Cabo San Lucas tomorrow to fish with my guest and very good friend Garrett Gill from Denver Colorado. Garrett is ready for the sunshine and beautiful temperatures Baja provides this time of year as Colorado has had high’s in the teens for most of this past week. I will be sure to let you all know how we do.

Until then……… keep fishing!

Here is Brian Doelle from Chicago. Brian spent three days with me last week fly fishing out of Cabo San Lucas. We caught many Sierra (above) as well as Bonita (below) and we had a blast catching mid sized Rooster fish.

As I write this report from Cabo San Lucas where I am fishing with guests it is pouring down rain. We normally do not see much rain this time of year but it is welcomed as we need all the moisture we can get here in Southern Baja. Today, we received right around two and a half inches of rain. I know that dose not compare to the feet of snow that is falling in many parts of the United States but it was the talk of the town for us today. Tomorrow we are supposed to be back to the sunshine that Cabo San Lucas is known for.

This past week we saw partly cloudy skies with lows around 51 degrees in the East Cape and in Cabo San Lucas the overnight lows were about ten degrees warmer. Our day time highs were in the upper 70’s to low 80’s. It was perfect weather for those that are freezing in the states currently.

On the fishing front I have spent most of the last week in Cabo San Lucas guiding guests. The fly fishing out of Cabo San Lucas has been very good with the inshore fly fishing taking center stage. Along the Cabo inshore waters we have been having great success catching Sierra, Bonita, and Rooster fish on the fly, along with the occasional Pompano or Snapper mixed in. Off shore, the Dorado continue to be in the area although you need to do a little hunting for them. Once they are found, fly fishing for them is possible. The stripe Marlin bite has been just ok and not productive enough to keep the fly fishing anglers interest as they have been having fun inshore. We have been finding good fishing on both the Pacific side as well as the Sea of Cortez side. We found great action on both sides this past week especially during the early morning hours for the Sierra. Most of the Sierra have been in the 5 to 6 pound range with a few over ten pounds mixed in. We have also seen some decent action for Bonita not far off shore. The Rooster fish have been an afternoon bite and have been in the 5 to 10 pound range with a few larger fish up to 30 pounds showing on the live bait teasers.

Along the beaches of the East Cape the early morning fly fishing for Sierra continues to be productive. We have seen some wind from the North so most anglers are heading out early trying to get a few hours in before the wind picks up. We also continue to see a few Rooster fish and Lady fish mixed in as well. I have a very close friend who was fishing a beach not far from us and he caught a good number of Rooster fish on a clam afternoon. These fish were not big, averaging 2 to 3 pounds but they were still Roosters.

Offshore along the East Cape we continue to see a few scattered tuna along with a few Dorado and Marlin. The wind has dictated where the boats have been fishing. On calm days a few of them have been taking the long ride to the South to fish off the Gordo Banks near San Jose del Cabo. This is a little bit of a gamble this time of year because although the fishing can be great to our South, if the wind dose come up the ride home can be miserable. For those looking to stay a little closer to home and be a little closer to the margaritas in the hotel if the wind dose come up the fishing just a few miles out front has been providing fairly steady action keeping most anglers happy.

I will be here in Cabo fishing tomorrow and after we finish up I will head back over to the East Cape. I will have a couple of days off before I return here to Cabo to fish with my next guests. During my down time I plan on hitting the beaches near home to see what I can find. I will be sure to give you all a report.

Until then…..keep fishing!

Hi folks,

It’s been a very busy couple of weeks since my last report. I was in the states for a few days fly fishing for Red fish and after a wonderful trip in New Orleans, I headed directly back to Baja and straight to Magdelena Bay to finish up my season there. Last week I spent five great days with Jeff Croy who owns a fly shop in Sante Fe, New Mexico called The Reel Life. Jeff brought along some clients to fish with me in Mag Bay and we had a nice trip. We caught some nice Dorado as well as a few Tuna. We also had some good action for Marlin with Jeff getting a nice fish upwards of about 140lbs.

I returned home to the East Cape a couple days ago and as I expected, the wind from the North is here and blowing quite strong. We have had wind for the past three days and the forcast calls for more wind over the next few days.

On the days that we are able to get out and fish it has been a little difficult but we still have some fish in the area. Most of the fish are close to shore and most people are fishing for Sierra which are plentiful in the area. We continue to see a few Jacks and some smaller Roosterfish mixed in with the Sierra.

The fishing we saw for Tuna and Dorado a couple weeks ago has slowed down and with the wind blowing for the last few days it may cool the water off enough to move any remaining fish out of the area. We will wait and see.

This time of year the season slows down quite a bit here in the East Cape. Some of the hotels are closed and the ones that do remain open have just a few guests in them and a handful of boats in the water. This dose not mean the fishing can not be good; it can be very good this time of year, but ironically it all depends on the wind. If we get a few days where the wind subsides, we should see some good fishing. Sometimes we do not know what species we will be fishing for on these wintery days but we have so many species in the area we usually find something to pull on the end of our line.

I will be headed over to Cabo San Lucas just after the first of the year to fish some guests on the Pacific side. I will be in Cabo San Lucas as well as here in the East Cape this winter fishing between the two. I will be sure to keep you all informed.

Until then…..keep fishing!

Hi Folks,

It is late in the season here in the East Cape and fishing remains steady. We have seen an increase in the winds from the North making it difficult to fish on some days. On the days when we have had calm seas and are able to fish we continue to see good action. The main action has been for Tuna out in front of La Ribera. Most of the Tuna have been in the twelve to twenty pound class with some bigger fish up to sixty pounds mixed in. We have had some good fishing for Marlin and Dorado not only in the same area as the Tuna but through out the bay. We continue to see Dorado and Marlin from the light house to Punta Pescadero. We are not seeing huge numbers of Dorado or Marlin but we are seeing enough of them to keep things interesting.

Closer to shore we have had very good fishing in the early morning hours for Sierra. They have been in large schools almost anywhere you look for them. We also have a few smaller Rooster fish and Jack Crevelle mixed in with the Sierra. Sierra are most active in the early morning hours so I suggest getting out early.

I am currently in New Orleans and will be fishing for Red fish over the next four days. On Monday I will head back to Mexico and straight to Magdelena Bay to meet my next group of anglers. Magdelena Bay has been fishing very well. Last week I was with Chris and Mike Watts out of Scottsdale Arizona and we had a great trip. We found great action for Marlin as well as some Dorado and Tuna. The fishing in Magdelena Bay is heating up and should be very good for my next guests that arrive next Tuesday. I will be sure to let everyone know how my trip here in New Orleans goes as well as how we do in Magdelena Bay next week.

Until then…..keep fishing!
