Hi Everyone!

The last ten days have brought a few surprises including some colder water offshore. Marlin fishing has slowed down considerably as well as the Dorado. But we’ve had some great inshore fishing, you’ve seen those photos above!

Offshore finds some Marlin and Sailfish, but things have slowed incredibly from what we saw last week. With warmer temperatures occurring, we expect the bite to pick back up very soon. Rumors of tuna have circulated, but like a good treasure map-you’ll have to find them.

Inshore we’ve had an increase in mullet helping produce Roosters feeding and chasing our flies. This has definitely kept this last week interesting and fun….we’re still waiting on the sardines to show and when they do, we know they will fire the fish up. Warmer temps prove spring has sprung-with temperatures in the 80s best bring your sunscreen!

We’re out all week-come join us in paradise,

Until next time….keep fishing.

Hi folks,

Well,  April is off to a great start.  Both the offshore fly fishing and inshore fly fishing are going pretty well.  Offshore we have a good number of Sail fish as well as Marlin.  These fish showed up about a week ago and have been here ever since.  Most of the bill fish action is between Punta Pescadero and Rancho Leonero.  These fish have been fairly close to shore with a majority of the fish being seen between two and six miles out.  Do not think this is the only area.  I have heard of reports of fish being caught as far out as fifteen miles off of Pescadero.  I was out today with Bill, Annie, and Chris and we had a nice Sail fish that we teased in but we could just not get it to take Annie’s fly.  Maybe tomorrow.

If it is Dorado you are looking for we have the occasional Mahi being caught in and around the Marlin and Sail fish but it is still pretty spotty.  I was out last week with Ron Guerra who is a great friend of mine and we fish together often both here and in Mag Bay. Ron was able to get a couple very nice Dorado.  One fish was about 15lbs. and the other might have been closer to 20lbs.  I did hear on the radio today that one of the boats got a Dorado that was estimated to be about 40lbs.

We have had a fair number of Porpoise in the area but no Tuna with them so far.  We have had some decent Bonita associated with a few of the pods but no Tuna as of yet.  We should see some any day now.

Inshore we have some very good action with Rooster fish and Jack Crevelle.  That is if you can find them.  One day we are finding fish and the next day you go back and it is a ghost town.  We are seeing some very good sized fish as you can see from the photo’s above.  These fish are starting to gather to spawn.  We have encountered a few schools of fish where they want nothing to do with you or your offering.  If you can find the school that is willing to play you will have some fun.

    Until next time…keep fishing.

Hi folks,

This past week was  frustrating for the anglers especially the fly fishing anglers here in Baja.  We once again experienced four days of hard wind from the North here in the East Cape keeping most anglers around the pool and sipping margaritas.  I, on the other hand made a plan with my guest Jim Hintz who was visiting from Wisconsin.  Jim and I headed out early a couple of days this past week and drove over to fish out of Cabo San Lucas where the water was flat.  That is typical this time of year.  When the wind blows from the North here on the Cape it is flat on the Pacific side.  Jim and I had two great days of fly fishing for Rooster fish.  Jim had never fished in the salt water before and his first introduction was a great one.  We had Rooster fish boiling around the boat and Jim was very successful.  The fish we found were not big. These fish were fun and perfect for Jim’s introduction to fly fishing in salt water.

Here at home the wind has let up and the conditions are returning back to normal as I write this report.  We have some decent fishing in the area.  Close to shore we still have a few Sierra in the area but the bite has dropped off quite a bit from what it was a few weeks ago.  We also are experiencing day to day fishing for small to medium sized Rooster fish and Jack Crevelle.  It seems as if one day we find them and the next we don’t.  Over the next few weeks this should change as we typically see some very good numbers of fish move into the area starting in early April with the peak in May and June.

Offshore, we have a few Bonito in the area as well as a few Marlin.  The numbers of Marlin have increased over the past few days with more fish being spotted but most of them have been reluctant to bite.  We also have the odd Dorado in the area but the action for Dorado has not been steady.   I did hear of a few Tuna this week but they were down toward Cabo San Lucas.  That is a long way to go from here in the East Cape.

We will celebrate Semana Santa (the Easter Holiday) this coming weekend.  Our beaches will be full of locals celebrating the holiday with great food, laughs, and of course fishing.  It seems as if this holiday the wind blows from the North every year.  This year the forecast shows beautiful weather and no wind.  We are keeping our fingers crossed.

Until next time…keep fishing.

Hi folks,

It has been a great week here in Baja.  We had some great fishing late last week with some very good fishing from the beach.  As you can see from the photo above, I fished with my good friend Stacy Corbin from Alaska and we were successful in getting Stacy a big Rooster fish from the beach.  Earlier that day, I had clients out on a half day trip where I found some fish and I had a good feeling.  We had a great shot at a school of fish and one of my clients hooked (but had some bad luck) and broke off a fish in the thirty pound range.  My clients did not get any more shots as we had to leave and get them back to the hotel to meet the rest of their party and off to the airport.  I knew Stacy would be waiting for me at the hotel and we headed right back out to the spot where I found the fish earlier that morning.  Stacy and I were not on the beach fifteen minutes when we encounterd a school of Rooster fish.  The photo above is the results.  It was a great afternoon.

Since then we have had a few days of strong winds from the North.  That shut the beach fishing down but did not keep Jeff Solis and his group from getting out and chasing Marlin.  Jeff was able to find four Marlin last Saturday that were willing to take the fly.  The seas have calmed down since then and we are back to flat and beautiful conditions.  Problem is, no one seems to know where the fish went.  The past two days have been a little slow with a few Dorado and a few Pargo taking center stage.  This is typical during the spring here in Baja.  We have great seas and great fishing for a few days and then we receive some wind and that scatters the bait as well as the fish.  Over the next day or so  the fishing should pick up as it is forecast to be flat, calm and gorgeous for the next several days.  We will be out on the water every day this week.  We will be sure to report what we find.

Until next time…….Keep fishing.

Hi folks,

Well, it is springtime here in Baja and as many of you know that means wind.  The wind over the past couple of weeks has made the fly fishing here in Baja very frustrating.  We are in our typical cycle for this time of year with a few days of very hard wind followed by a few days of flat calm seas and perfect Baja fly fishing conditions.  Last week we had a stretch of beautiful weather and no wind!  Currently it has been blowing for the past three days and is forecast to blow another couple of days before settling down.  We should see conditions improving on Thursday.  On the days we are able to get out and fish we have some pretty good action in the area.  We continue to see great fishing for Sierra from the beach as well as inshore.  We also have a good number of Rooster fish and some of them are big.

For the past three nights in front of the hotel the Rooster fish and Jack Crevelle have been crashing the beach chasing bait and if you happen to be in the right place at the right time you have a chance at a big one.  I know of three different fish that were hooked by conventional anglers and all three fish were over thirty pounds.  I have also heard of some very nice Rooster fish being caught to our South but have not had time to check that area out.  I will be venturing down that way in the next few days to look around.

A little further off shore we still have a few Dorado in the area.  The Dorado have been in small schools with the average fish around eight pounds.  This past week I also heard of a few Tuna being found down to our South.  We continue to see Marlin off the lighthouse at 10-12 miles out.

The wind should stop in the next day or so and when it does we will be out on the water.  The fishing is improving every day and this spring is shaping up to be a great one.

Until next time….. Keep fishing!
